vintage sci fi
I've been reading some vintage scifi in the last year, like the complete works of Theodore Sturgeon (I'm up to v.6). But yesterday I started reading the collected stories of Roger Zelazny (in 2 volumes). What's different about these stories from the Sturgeon ones is that I've read most of them before...but not in 20 years for most.

The sensation of reading these again 20 years later is disconcerting. Who I am has changed and how I relate to these themes and allusions has altered. What's disconcerting is that many of these stories are among my favorites. And it's very odd to find them different than I remember. But it doesn't make them any less moving.

13 & 14
I think I'm maxing out on king cake. Unbelievable. #13 was brought to us from Lake Charles; it's their "best" king cake from a local grocery, I think. The icing is frightening, like cake icing. So I took that off. It was also apple filled.

#14 was from L@urel Street bakery. Nice and light. Good stuff...and no icing, only sugar.

And I think E just came home from the grocery with another one....oh dear.

Feet on the Street
I just finished Roy Blount's memoir published in February 2005. Though it is small, it took me a while to finish, mostly because I found it really sad.

I think Blount got much of New Orleans, right. But the New Orleans he knew in the 1960s as a cub reporter for the local paper, is as gone as the pre-K NOLA that his memoir is set in. He discusses the "what-if" possibility of a big storm hitting the city...a little too prescient for my stress levels.

I hope his book had good sales from February to August. Now it's just sad.

#12
I splurged on a more expensive king cake yesterday from the fancy pants pastry/gelato/chocolatier shop, 5ucre on Mag. It's delish but not what I would call traditional. The instructions say to warm it up and it was like eating a warm stick of butter wrapped in dough, in a good way. But next weekend (for parade company) I'll probably get one at a boutique bakery. Their cakes are $$$ but good.

Was my first filled king cake of the season from Ant0ine's (via Walgreen's). And it was filled with apple. Pretty good. I miss getting the super fresh Ant0ine's cakes from around the corner. That building flooded to about 2 feet and is ungutted, but I did notice it is for sale. I can only hope for another bakery.

#10
King cake #10 was one my Mom made for my niece's 13th birthday party. Good sugar & icing and not overworked (like when she tries to make a braided one), very McKenz1e like. And I got the baby.

8 & 9
Just got back from a crawfish boil and my lips are still burning from the artichoke that was soaked in cayenne (in a good way).

KC#8 was from a westbank coffee shop called P@rrot Pete's (I think). It was layered, light and cinnamony. The icing was gooey & the sugar was nice and coarse. Good stuff.

KC#9 was from G@mbino's. It was a little stale & heavy in comparison.

Did I mention that I also ate a Valentine themed cupcake? But I did resist the banana pudding.

KC #7
Was a slice (so a little stale) which I purchased at Il P0sto, the cafe around the corner. But it was baked at B0ulangerie. I've never had their plain New Orleans style, this needed a little something, jam or butter, maybe. But it was sitting out on a counter so I won't complain too much.

KC #6
Since I had to be on the Westbank this afternoon for a dentist appointment, I stopped at Hi D0 bakery on my way back. I had their king cake for the first time a few years ago, but haven't since. So I bought one for work tomorrow and a small one for me & E tonight. I could have eaten the entire cake in one sitting; it's so good. Kind of like a fresh, moister, slightly richer, plain McKenzie's. I can see why they won the newspaper sponsored contest for a couple of years. AND you can order your cake in shapes! Fleur-de-lis, crawfish or crab.

KC 4 & 5
#4 was purchased at my local grocery, Z@r@'s and was made by the P@rty P@l@ce in Kenner. It was OK, too much icing for me and the dough seemed a little undercooked.

#5 was at work at this morning and is a plain from R0use's. Again it was ok, lots of icing but nice crunchy sugar and again it looked a little undercooked.

King Cake #3
A slice from CCs, courtesy of my honey. It was a little stale (but he bought it midday), very cinnamon roll-ish, gooey icing and purple, green, and gold jimmies. So pretty good and very unexpected.

I had "Don't you wish your girlfriend" stuck in my head. Luckily SOMEONE had posted the Push It video on YouTube so I've switched to that. At least I like Salt-n-Peppa.

French King Cake
Sample #2 for 2009 is a French King Cake from Le M@deleine. The almond paste was delish, but I think the dough was a little overworked in the piece that I had.

If I seem to be slow this year, it's because I still have birthday cake at home + brother #1 brought a H@ydel's cake last week and left it. I will endeavor to do better soon.

Sienna & the horsies
Sienna met a couple of quarter horses (big feet, but smaller than clydesdales?) today on our walk. Where were we walking? Down our street. Random horses in the neighborhood.

Sienna was very excited and really wanted to go sniff the horses but the driver (cart/trap thingy) thought that was bad idea. I wasn't really going to let her; I would hate to have to explain to LEM why the dog went to the emergency room because of a horse kick.

Sienna trotted along the sidewalk after them sniffing the air and clearly wanted to hang out. If for no other reason than they might offer her some delicious (in her mind) manure.

Every day is adventure.

real celebrity sighting
I saw Jennifer Coolidge while out shopping this afternoon. She is really tall, but looks pretty much the same as in the movies, except prettier. I refrained from calling her, Stifler's Mom or doing the Bend & Snap.

NOLA weather
Lots of complaints about the weather down here. So someone on another blog posted the record high temps for the last 20 years.

I knew the one for Dec. 25th 1987 (79 degrees). Why did I know that you ask? Because I went to pick up my grandmother for lunch at my parents'. And her house was boiling because she didn't have central a/c and because she was leaving she didn't open any of the windows. While I was helping her finish up, she fainted while sitting on a stool in the kitchen.

My grandmother was taller than me and at the time outweighed me. But I lifted of slumped body off of the stool and lay her on the ground. Then ran and called my Mom.

Scariest Christmas ever. She ended up being fine, just overcome by the heat. Eventually her cardiologist told her she had to get central a/c because her ailing heart could not take the heat.

Whew.

Previous year's tallies
Despite the various lengths of carnival season (epiphany to Mardi Gras day), my tallies have been pretty consistent:
2008 - 10
2007 - 13
2006 - 12

This year is a long season (Jan. 6th - Feb.24th) so let's see how much I eat. This is why I NEVER resolve to lose weight for new year's.
